Exploration is a core activity for Cairn, Oil & Gas vertical of Vedanta Limited and its exploration strategy is based on a portfolio of high reward prospects across the risk spectrum. It uses leading edge geological and geophysical technologies to enhance the probability of exploration success and monetise its hydrocarbon resources.

Cairn 7 blocks in its portfolio. The blocks are located in four strategically focused areas namely one block in Rajasthan, one on the west coast of India, four on the east coast of India and one in South Africa.

Cairn ~27% of India's domestic crude oil production. To date, Cairn has opened 4 frontier basins with numerous discoveries, 38 in Rajasthan alone.

The Mangala field in Rajasthan, discovered in January 2004, is one of the largest onshore oil discoveries in India. Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwariya fields – major discoveries in the Rajasthan block – have gross ultimate oil recovery of over 1 billion barrels.

In addition, Cairn is focused on exploration across the asset portfolio both in India and core areas internationally and has also started the seismic survey in its South Africa block, which is in line with Cairn's exploration led growth strategy focused on replacement and growth of reserves leading to long term sustainable value creation.
