Where We Operate

Assam

Located in the Arakan Basin of Assam, Cairn holds 7650 km² of acreage with 12 Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) blocks and 3 Discovered Small Fields (DSF) blocks.

Cairn conducted large-scale airborne gravity magnetic and seismic surveys for exploration and is committed to investing in developing oil and gas resources that will provide energy supply to many ancillary industries.

The first test production from the Hazarigaon field commenced in Assam in April 2023 – making Cairn the first company in the Northeast to commence gas flow from a DSF block. The acreage has a significant resource potential of up to 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Cairn plans to conduct an extensive exploration drilling campaign in the next two years across the Golaghat, Jorhat and Tinsukia districts of Assam.

A Gas Sales Agreement with Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) to sell 3.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas from the Hazarigaon field aims at contributing to the state’s clean energy initiative as it has laid down the infrastructure for distribution of cleaner fuel to the industry through pipelines.

The gas produced is evacuated through a main trunk pipeline, and a gas cascading system to AGCL. The gas evacuation from the field will be used by tea growers among other industries. Additionally, the gas cascading system will enable gas from Hazarigaon to be a prime contributor in fueling 100 CNG buses that will be plying in Guwahati as part of the clean energy initiative of the Government of Assam.
